Reverend Denise Parker Lawrence serves as an Associate Minister at The Greater Allen A.M. E. Cathedral of New York under the tutelage of Pastors Reverend Dr. Floyd H. Flake and Co-Pastor Reverend Dr. Margaret Elaine Flake. Reverend Lawrence served as the Director of the One Choice, One Voice: Abstinence until Marriage Project which provided Abstinence Education to youth primarily in Queens, New York since 2005, through the use of High School presentations and year round after-school programs. One Choice offered a message of hope and possibility to a population, overly saturated with negative and destructive sexual messages. One Choice integrated a monthly Black History Program in order to equip and empower youth on the contributions of African Americans in the society at large. To that end, under Rev. Lawrence’s leadership, One Choice sponsored The Obama Effect: Beyond Trayvon Martin and Beyond Lincoln: The Celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Emancipation community based workshops.
In addition, Rev. Lawrence is a Board Certified Chaplain and Pastoral Counselor. As a Supervisor-in Training (SIT), Rev Lawrence provides chaplaincy training for the Clinical Pastoral Education Department of Episcopal Health Services at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. She is the convener of the Far Rockaway Chapter. Currently, Rev. Lawrence is the Nassau County Pastoral Care Coordinator for Metropolitan Jewish Health Services (MJHS) with an overall responsibility of the coordination of pastoral and religious support services to Hospice patients. Rev. Lawrence is a Charles Reason Public Service Scholar and graduated Hunter College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Early Childhood Education. In addition, she holds a Master’s Degree from Alliance Theological Seminary. She is proud to be an Executive Board member of the illustrious Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Theta Iota Omega Chapter. Rev. Denise was recently appointed Co-Chair of the North Atlantic Regional Prayer Team. Currently, she serves as the Chapter Chaplain of the Long Island Chapter of the Links, Inc. As well as being, an Executive Board member of the First Episcopal District, New York Annual Conference , A.M.E.- Women in Ministry. Rev. Lawrence is also a member of the NAACP – Westbury Chapter. She has received citations and awards from Congressman Gregory Meeks; Senator Malcolm Smith; Leadership Award from Youth and Tennis Inc. and The Young People’s and Children’s Division, Women’s Missionary Society, New York Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. And most recently from The National Council of Negro Women for Pastoral Care. Rev. Lawrence is married to attorney Mortimer Lawrence, and they are the proud parents of Michele, Mac, Misha, and Maya. She is especially elated to be Grandma to Alia, 6; Ryan, 6; Addison, 4 and Ava, 3. By far, Rev. Lawrence’s favorite scripture is 2 Cor. 5:7, “Walk by faith, not by sight.” and she strives to live her life “as though she were the only bible one may ever read.” |
